I have never stayed at any of the hotels, but my preference would probably be:

Marriott Waterside or Embassy Suites as first choice. These are across the street from each other- and right by a trolley station in a nice safe downtown location. Both are walkable from the cruise ship terminal if you don%26#39;t have a lot of luggage.

If you can afford one of the above two hotels, I would pick downtown over Ybor.

Residence Inn and Courtyard Marriott are practically connected and are downtown. I%26#39;d look at traveler reviews for the differences. Both appear to be in good condition from the outside.

I%26#39;d probably rate the Howard Johnson%26#39;s last- it%26#39;s location is not ideal on the far end of downtown. It%26#39;s certainly safe, just less convenient than the others.

Thanks for your input it was very helpful. It%26#39;s nice to know what part of town is ';safer';

Downtown and Ybor are both safe, but I would go w/ the recommendations of FSUfan. There are several restaruants downtown, channelside district which is right by the port where you will embark from. Also, I like Hattricks. They have great food, tvs, etc. Ybor would be great to try some cuban food such as Carmines.
