Going to Orlando in May and now my adult son has found out he can come with us or meet us there.

Price of flights to Orlando much higher at the moment compared to price we paid.

Do you think best bet is to wait till couple of weeks before departure just for one return ticket in the hope we may be able to bag a good deal.

Would prices be likely to come dowm much?

Sorry I have no idea (bump)

I would think the prices are pretty much static right now and won%26#39;t really come down. The only other thing that might work is if you wait until like a day or two before, then you might find a deal if the airline has some empty seats. Not sure if you can use Priceline in England, but if you can you might want to try them, you can just put in what you want to pay and see if you can it for that. Good luck.

I fly with Southwest. And I know the longer I wait, the more I will pay. I am flying in June to Orlando. Just purchased my flight tickets this morning. Yesterday when I checked them they were a little more then today, so I saved a few dollars.

Is it standard to have to pay in full upon arrival ?

Is it standard to have to pay in full upon arrival and to have to pay for the entire stay if one cancels?

I recently told by a B and B that payment in full was standard at check in. I never heard of that before .. usually they put a hold on the amount but no charges are made until you check out. The also had a draconian cancellation fee - if you cancel within 24 hours, they charge the full amount which would have been $1,300. Not that I plan on canceling but in the case of bad weather or my spouse%26#39;s mother having complications related to her recent dizzy spell, it could happen. You would think they would be more flexible in a bad economy. I can see paying or a night or two if I cancel at the last minute but no the whole amount. Are these standard practices?

PS I am looking for recommendation for places to stay in/near St Augustine.

Is it standard to have to pay in full upon arrival ?

This is quite a difficult question. I agree that most hotels or B%26amp;Bs charge on departure and I appreciate your situation but think about it from the owner%26#39;s point of view.

I%26#39;m not in the hotel business but I am self employed and cancellations can play havoc with your schedule and mean that other people who would have booked your services look elsewhere.

It%26#39;s not such a huge deal for %26#39;big business%26#39; or for a hotel chain but for an independent B%26amp;B $1300 could be the tip over point between survival or failure in this economic climate.

Many people think nothing of giving a few hours notice of cancellation, so you lose that business and also the business that you have to turn away because you thought you were fully booked.

I%26#39;m sorry, but in the case of holidays/vacations, that%26#39;s why you buy insurance. If you have an emergency, it will cover your costs but obviously if the weather forecast doesn%26#39;t suit you it doesn%26#39;t count.

Is it standard to have to pay in full upon arrival ?

Thanks for the reply. I just don%26#39;t trust this setup. There have been some complaints about the beds being uncomfortable for this place and being charged in full upon arrival seems to be giving up too much leverage. Even if the economy was good, I would be uncomfortable but with it being so bad, this inflexibility on the owners seems unreasonable. After all, when placed take your card, they put a hold on the funds. The funds are there for them, so if someone skips town the B and B would have access to the money. On the other hand if I there is a problem, I have little recourse except through my credit card company and when you sign in, I suspect you must sign away your rights to dispute the charges.

As far as charging for a the entire week, I have seen other places that pro-rate such a penalty and they make it clear that if they rebook, they don%26#39;t stick the consumer. Under the system these folks have, they can be collecting twice for the room. Again, it is very one-sided.

I realized another reason this bothered me - you see this sort of interaction in movies and TV shows when people rent rooms by the hour.

The only two times that I have had to pay in full when I checked in it was all too soon before iI knew why! Once was in Deadwood, S.D. and the other in Islamorada, Fl. Thankfully we were only to be there a few days and we left after the first miserable night and lost our $$$.I will never again pay in full when I check in...look for other acommodations.

How about accommodations??? Sorry....

katesavage2001, I would suggest shopping around a little. There are many fine B%26amp;B%26#39;s in St. Augustine, some might have a more lenient canellation policy.

So far, I am thinking of staying at a regular hotelL

Vilano Beach Hampton Inn %26amp; Suites St. Augustine or

La Quinta Inn %26amp; Suites St. Augustine

As far as B and Bs/Inns:

Our House of St. Augustine B%26amp;B or

St. George Inn

Hi Katesavage thanks for choosing St.Augustine and surrounding beaches area. If u are staying on the beach Hampton Inn and Suites would be a perfect hotel to stay in . In downtown St George Inn would be a perfect choice.

Staying on the beach will make you enjoy best of both worlds like we beach locals do :))) Enjoy visiting the town and its beaches.

Mehmet

My vote .... Hampton .... in Vilano

Aye, I run a small inn and we charge in full at check in mainly because we don%26#39;t have a lot of nickel and dime charges to add to your bill. We don%26#39;t have phones in the room, so you won%26#39;t run up phone bills, we have mini fridges but they%26#39;re not stocked, our internet is free, etc etc. We have a 7 day cancellation, 14 days for holidays whereby if you cancel less than the required notice, we attempt to book the room, but if we can%26#39;t you%26#39;d be responsible for the entire amount. Many small places with good reputations tend to get booked far in advance, so the chances are that we%26#39;ll have turned away bookings to hold a room for you. I hope that sheds some light on cancellation and payment policies.

You mentioned ';You would think they would be more flexible in a bad economy';, actually in a bad economy we need what revenue we can get. Mortgages or rent on downtown commercially zones historic properties is a lot!!

Lodging reservations - plan ahead or do it on the fly?

We are planning on a trip in a couple of weeks and haven%26#39;t made any reservations and usually don%26#39;t travel that way if possible.

Was wondering if we need to plan ahead for finding hotels and making reservations for a couple of nights in the Saint Augustine area. We aren%26#39;t quite certain if this is at the end of the trip or at the beginning.

Thanks

Lodging reservations - plan ahead or do it on the fly?

Do not do it on the fly! Spring breakers will be arriving any time and although you might find a vacant room I certainly would not take the chance this time of year. I was just there a couple of weeks ago and did see vacancy signs around the weather was cold and raining. Don%26#39;t take a chance of ruining your vacation. I also like to travel without reservations but if I know I am going at a peak time I will break down and secure a room for peace of mind. I never take too kindly to having to sleep in the car (-:

Lodging reservations - plan ahead or do it on the fly?

Rothb1,

Thats a great way to travel but... it would seem to me that first by making reservations ahead of time that you are sure to get a room and you most likely will get a better price that way. Seems pretty risky to me I did it one time I went to Louisville Kentucky on a trip to see some sites . There was a big car show in town and had to pay twice the price for a room after checking more than 5 places

Can you spell TENT?I hope you have had good success with this type of travel. I do use this type of traveling in some cases after... I have a place to stay.

If you want to toss the dice then do not complain with how the dice lands I guess . It could be interesting ....counting how many bed bugs you got in just a one nights stay. Spontaneous is a good way to travel though if your not concerned about bugs or how much crack was made in the room.

Enjoy!

Hi Rothb1 thanks for choosing St.Augustine. Yes that would be a great idea planning your vacation ahead of time so book now before your hotel fills up . Please check out things to do in the old city and enjoy your stay in the old town and surrounding areas.

Mehmet

A good rule of thumb for this time of year in this area is to make reservations if you will be staying on Friday or Saturday night.

Sunday through Thursday I would recommend NOT making reservations. With todays economy most hotels are not running 100% occupancy during the week, and you can find some real good deals by just walking in.

Usually I like to make reservations on far trips or going to the big city. We would be there during the week. I was hoping that spring break would not be that large. Maybe we will try to nail down that portion of the trip.

Thanks

Hi, sometimes a few weeks can stretch into a month or two. If you find this happening I would strongly suggest making a reservation ahead of time. I often visit the area in May. May is graduation month for Flagler College. Talk about crowded!!!!!

April is the month many of the schools take the annual field trip. No real hotel problems noted but lots and lots of school kids running every which way on St. George :)

Definitely book ahead...there%26#39;s big concerts coming to the area too...Chicago, James Taylor....etc.

Lake Berkley !

Hi ,

We are going to Orlando on 1st week in Nov 09 , and carn%26#39;t wait .

We will be staying in Lake Berkley for 1 week , can anyone give me any good info on this complex .

Any advise is a help .

Thankyou Tilly T .

Lake Berkley !

we stayed at lake berkley december/january 2003/4 it was a safe gated complex, with a club house and pool, its near medieval times and by a big wall mart, the villa we had was fab, we went with travel city direct in fact i think lake berkley is in their new brochure. you will need a car as its some way out, when we landed at sandford and hit the 192 we couldnt find the place but if you follow the signs for medieval times you will come right upon it.

have a great time, we are going for our 4th visit in august and staying at pop century.

Lake Berkley !

We stayed in Lake Berkley last June and thought it was great. It%26#39;s in a very good location, two minute drive from Walmart and loads of various restaurants on the 192. We had a look round the clubhouse and pool but it always seemed to be deserted. It was sometimes a pain having to wait to get through the gate but after a few days the security guards would recongise us and wave us through. You are given a ticket to display from your rearview mirror when you first arrive. On the whole we found it safe, quiet and very well maintained and would return, even if we never managed to find the actual lake!!!

Hi Tilly,

We stayed here in Oct 2007 and absolutely loved it here. Our villa overlooked the lake which then had a resident alligator. The Fishing and wildlife-birds were wonderful to watch. It is close to the busy 192 and Walmart but set back in a very in a very quiet, safe and peaceful location. It is close to parks, good eating places and shopping. We are coming out again in October of this year and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Are you doing halloween at Universal? We went last time and had a fantastic time, will definitely go again this year, although this would not suit younger children, it%26#39;s really scary!

You have made a great choice, have a great holiday!

Hi,

We stayed in Lake Berkley Drive, Lake Berkley which is just off 192 behind Medeval Times and Wal Mart.

It is a gated community with security at the gate. You are issued with a pass when you arrive and you have to display it every time to get back in. the guards were friendly and always acknowledged you each time you passed.

The area is excellent, clean and tidy. Ground maintenance staff descend on the area twice a week to keep it nice. There is a lake to walk around with a beach and a pier to fish from.

The location is excellent and the travel times to the attractions are great. Downtown Disney is about 15 min and Universal about 25 min. I would strongly recommend it and we would love to go back again.

There is a video on you tube that shows you around the area. See ....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_6TYfmANiA

This video shows 1061 Lake Berkley, watch the video to the end as it also shows in and around the neighbourhood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TunN9Bz8VTY

Wish we could go back soon.

David

We are staying at Lake Berkley in June so it is good to here positive reviews.

I thought it was closer to Universal Studios 15 minutes drive?

floribabe,

Driving times are all to do with the traffic conditions. I can%26#39;t say I thought I was held up to much by traffic and these were the longest it took us to get to these places.

Hey 10 min is nothing when you are on holiday. Take it easy and enjoy yourselves. Wish we could join you.

David

DLB

So you are exaggerating when you say half an hour?

I hope this is a really nice area because last time I stayed at Formosa gardens loved the area and the time before stayed at Highlands Reserve Davenport did not like it too much thought it was too far out.We prefer the Universal Parks to the Disney that is why I am concerned about being so far away from them!

  • Cab Fare

Can someone tell me about how much it would cost to take a cab from the places listed below? I have 7:30 am reservations, and will have to take a cab in order to get there on time. Are there cabs waiting at the resorts, or do you have to call one? Thank you

    CBR to Polynesia

    CBR to Chief Mickey鈥檚

    CBR to Animal Kingdom Lodge

    Cab Fare

There is a Fare Estimator at www.mearstransportation.com

There is a Character Breakfast Bus from CBR they start running at 6:30 I believe, I%26#39;ll double check that

    Cab Fare

    Hi partypa,

Where can I check to make sure they do have this transpertation?

    Thanks

We easily headed out by 7:00 at our resort to reach the TTC to get the shuttle to the Richard Petty driving experience. The bus said MK but the driver dropped us off at the TTC and the other family at the polynesian for a breakfast ADR. We were the only two families on the bus.

We did this again for a breakfast reservation at the Polynesian no problem to MK. We just monorailed to the Polynesian.

Ok I called the resort and they do have the Character Bus that starts at 6:40. Thanks for mentioning this.

We used the main bus stop, I do not believe the go to all bus stops that early.

Ok great, I will make sure I keep that in my notes. Thanks for the tip.

min, sorry I didn%26#39;t get back to you :(

Glad it is all sorted out :)

Keep in mind you will have to take the Character Bus to the Animal Kingdom and then take the Bus over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge ( I assume you are going to Boma ? and not Tusker House ? )

Thanks partypa, yes I am going to Boma. I am so glad I checked on here with you, beacuse I am sure I would have just paid the cab fare and went. Thanks for saving me some money.

    Just a thought here

When you take the Character Bus to Animal Kingdom, ask the driver if he could drop you off at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, if he isn%26#39;t in a big hurry, he might be able to do that for you. Otherwise, it%26#39;s a quick 5 minute ride on the next bus to the Lodge

Will be in South Beach in 2 weeks and looking for your 3 favorites. Advisorgirl among others has given a ton of info and has been very helpful in our search.

Just wondering if the TA%26#39;s have any input. Coming from the landlocked prairie we%26#39;re looking especially for seafood.

My fav Big Pink is casual but great, try it for lunch.

Joe%26#39;s and Nemo are great for seafood, others in that area would be Prime 112, Big Pink, Fratelli La Bufala.

Thanks again all. We%26#39;ll be trying all of them.....In 9 days now.

Which town is nicer to stay in? Ft Myers or Naples?Opinions?

I%26#39;d simply like some %26#39;personal opinions%26#39; on which place is nicer to stay in. We plan to visit both in April, but cannot afford to stay on Sanibel or Captiva (which would be ideal). What are the differences and/or advantages of each?? Any thoughts or opinions are welcome!

Which town is nicer to stay in? Ft Myers or Naples?Opinions?

I prefer Naples over Ft. Myers and I haven%26#39;t even stayed in Naples. We have gone to Ft. Myers for the last three years. Every year the traffic is unreal. Maybe not for you, being from CA! It takes forever to get anywhere. On our last trip Ft. Myers seemed more run down. There is a seedy area of town with pawn shops, tattoo parlors, and X-rated stuff. Ft. Myers is very spread out. We went and checked out Naples one day and it is beautiful. You can get to the beach in 10 minutes tops v%26#39;s 45 minutes from Ft. Myers to Ft. Myers Beach. The downtown area of Naples, 5th Ave, is filled with shops, galleries, and restaurants. Naples is just much more upscale. We will be in Naples for two weeks in March/April. One thing I would not miss in Ft. Myers is the Edison Estate. I like the beach at Ft. Myers beach, but the beach at Naples seemed more relaxing with less people. The sunsets are to die for!

Which town is nicer to stay in? Ft Myers or Naples?Opinions?

I agree with hensandchickens...Ft. Myers is OK but not as sophisticated and upscale as Naples. Ft. Myers Beach is really touristy and as stated the traffic is horrible. I would opt for Naples anytime. Captive/Sanibel are nice but again traffic can be horrid. Marco is another great alternative.

We have stayed in Naples on 3 holidays now, and we love it loads of great places to each from cheap and cheerful (as we English say) to fine dining, loads of shops, the beach is great, clean, everyone is so friendly. We will be back... We visitied Fort Myers doesnt seem as smart as Naples, hear the traffic can be bad as well...Give it a go we have certainly never been disappointed and stayed at several hotels but will go back to the Bellasera its excellent.....have a great holiday laura

I would say Naples over Ft. Myers. I go to Naples every year and love it. I have been to Ft. Meyers Beach on day trips and found it to be very run down.

Naples has nice hotels and beautiful beaches.

I much prefer Naples. I%26#39;ve never actually stayed in Ft. Myers but do a couple of day trips up there when we are visiting the area.

Wow, the responses are overwhelmingly in favor of Naples! That has been my impression from my reading materials as well. Thank you to all for the great and informative responses. So very helpful! I have another question if anyone has an answer: we are going during Easter week.....there aren%26#39;t a lot of college spring-breakers there, are there?? (I hope not.) I wouldn%26#39;t think you%26#39;d find that in Naples, but one never knows......ahh....one more question if anybody has a clue: which hotel is nicer (we%26#39;re using Marriott points) The Marriott Courtyard or Marriott Renaissance Inn on Tamiami Road??? THANKS BEAUCOUP for all of your responses!!!

Naples is not a spring break destination per se but there are more young people here than most would think. The Pier and Vanderbilt Beach will have a lot of younger people (High School and College age) but is not wild or anything. The most you%26#39;ll see is a group throwing around a football so I wouldn%26#39;t worry. If you chose Ft. Myers Beach then you see your typical spring break crowd.

As far as the two hotels, I posted on your other thread about the location of these hotels but cannot comment on the hotels since I have never stayed in either.

We have stayed in Naples the past four years and love it. We have stayed at the Doubletree and loved it. We are also trying a home rental through SouthBay Realty-they have been wonderful-for not much more. Hope this helps.

There%26#39;s really no comparison. Naples has it hands down over Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach. Better beaches, restaurants, shops, etc.

Hi: We just got back from Naples and we had a blast of a time. We only had a week, but we saw a lot.

I would recommend a drive to Marco Island and to eat at Sunset Grille. It is right on the beach with a veranda and the Crab Cakes, steamed Little Necks in a garlicy spicy red sauce are to die for!! We went there three times.

I would recommend Palm Breeze Charters (email: Boating [boating@palmbreezechartersmarco.com] 239-26-0909, for a one, two or three hour trip in Bill Carlson%26#39;s pontoon (complete with head). We went on a full day and into the 10,000 Islands and saw myriad birds, pelicans, etc., and to a remote beack where we got the most georgous shells. He also took us to Stan%26#39;s at Goodland and that was an interesting stop. The Clam Chowder was out of this world.

We rented a house (villa) in Naples in the Moorings. I would highly recommend this it had a pool and the back yard was very private. Three bedrooms and 2 baths and very nicely laid out with large living areas and the master bedroom was lovely. The owners Kristen and Wes Jasinski were more than gracious to us. I would highly recommend them and they have four homes in the area. Not cheap, but with kitchen we saved on eating out and it was a great experience. The bus station is in a recently redeveloped area which is now safe. It was not as little as little two years ago. Now it is very nice.

I have no experience with gypsy cabs, but I know Yellow Cab to be reliable. If you have a cell phone call them as you enter the city limits and they will meet you at the station.

Mears is great from the airport, but I prefer Yellow Cab in Kissimmee.

    orlando with an infant

hi, have been going to orlando every year. i am not going this year as i am expecting my first baby next month, however if we have the money we would love to go back sept 2010. anyone been to orlando with such a young child, if so how did you cope with that? any ideas would be great

    orlando with an infant

I traveled to Orlando last year with a 10-month old and a 5 year old. However, I took hubby, mom and dad, and my aunt, too. We stayed in a 2 BR condo and had fun! Lots of eyes on the kids at any given time. The thing is, the plane ride only took about 2.5 hours and the kids did very well. I also made sure to make the trip quick (4 nights) and agenda-free. We went to parks 3 of the 4 days and the rest of the time just went shopping/swimming. Went by the kids%26#39; schedule for naps, meals, etc. The other nice thing was, in the evenings my hubby and I often went out for dinner (more than at home) since my parents wanted to spend their evening relaxing in the condo rather than dining out.

PS - made frequent stops to the grocer for milk, baby food, etc. It would have been impossible to pack everything with the limited luggage allowance! Orlando has whateve you might need.

    Enjoy!

    orlando with an infant

PS - we had such fun we are all going next month, too. But this time just hubby, DS (now 5) and DD (will be 20 mos).

If you decide to go with a very young child... I would recommend pushing it further back into late Oct, Nov or Dec.

September is still very hot and I think that%26#39;s where you%26#39;ll have problems as the baby will be uncomfortable.

Other than that, it%26#39;s no different than going on a day-trip in your own country, except on a larger scale. Back a diaper bag every day, Your baby will be 18 months at that time? She/He will eat broken up table food at that point so just share your food. You can buy diapers, baby food, milk, juice, wipes etc here at any grocery store.

    helpful hints

    http://allears.net/pl/infant.htm

I%26#39;ll let you know..I%26#39;m taking my girls the beginning of June...ages 18 months, 8, 10, 15 %26amp; 19. I think it might be tough because she%26#39;s a goer! Luckily I have her older sisters to help.

I agree, I would put it as late in Sept as possible or better yet October so that the heat will abate.

The other tip I have, is to get yourself accomodation that either has a mini kitchen or full kitchen for preparing, sterilising etc. A condo with full kitchen and washer dryer for stays of over 4-5 days might be good, otherwise a one bed suite.

One I found are the Sanddollar Townhomes. Not sure what they are like but there seem to be a lot of them and possibly dated?

Sanddollar townhomes are near Pompano Joes Resaturant - right across from Ciboney Condo on Scenic Gulf Drive (Old 98) They are older and some are real nice and some not so nice. Right on the gulf. Whales Tail is just down the same road to the east about a mile. These are both in the Miramar Beach area.

Basically you have Destin Proper then just to the east Crystal Beach and then Miramar Beach then Sandestin. This is all within about 10 miles stretch. There are thousands of places to choose from.

    Road Crossing

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Maingate East in May, more or less opposite the Old Town fair.

How easy is it to cross the 192? Are they crossing points nearby.

Also, any idea how much a taxi would be from the Sea World area to the hotel?

    Road Crossing

very easy to cross taxi $15 but the holiday inn has a free bus to all the place,s runs every hour

    Road Crossing

    Many thanks.

There are cross walks at the intersections where the traffic lights are located, but you have to realize Hwy 192 is 3 or 4 lanes wide in both directions and it usually takes you two cycles of lights to get all the way across.

dave dont forget to try the 100 oz beers in old town lol

    Thanks Kat.

    Moocher - sounds good!!!

    dquette,

Please take advantage of the cross walks and do not attempt to cross in the middle of the block. Where you are east of I-4 is not as bad as west of I-4, but pedestrian vs vehicle incidents are common in that area. Take your time. Remember that the traffic pattern is opposite of what you are used to.

    Enjoy your visit.

    help needed on accomodation

Hi! we are looking to stay one week in a small bungalows/villas hotel/resort , anywhere in Florida, but by the beach.

Thanks a lot for your recommendation !

    help needed on accomodation

You should research the forums for the cities you might be interested in such as Naples, Ft. Meyers, Anna Maria Island, Sanibel Island, Ft. Lauderdale,Miami Beach, Etc. That may help you decide where you want to be then we can help you from there. Also let us know what time of year you will be visiting as that can make a difference too.

Hi do you have a special area in Florida you are interested in? What month are you looking to visit?

hi we are staying in the buena vista suites, we are not hiring a car are there any nice restaurants around.also are we on any bus routes.we normally stay on i drive and just wanted a change

    thanks in advance.

    buena vista restaurants and buses.......

I don%26#39;t think that hotel is one to stay at without a car. I think you should ask your TA why they recommended it. It is very close to Disney, but not walking distance anywhere and I don%26#39;t know if they have shuttles but am pretty sure not on a Lynx bus route.

LBV is a great area to stay, and better than Idrive. But you either need to hire a car, or stay in specific locations that have good access by foot to restaurants. I can suggest some, but think you need to to toatlly re think this holiday.

    buena vista restaurants and buses.......

Check out www.golynx.com for bus information, if in doubt I suggest sending a pm to scan60 our bus expert.

Check out the hotel website for shuttles etc and they should have something on their website re local ammenities such as shops and restaurants.

If this is where Google tells me it is (8203 World Center Dr, Orlando, FL), then you will be using any provided shuttles, taxis, or your feet to get about. No public bus service within about 1.5 miles.

I agree this location is no where near a LYNX bus line.

You may really need to consider getting a rental car or changing hotels, as taxi rides may get a little cost prohibitive going everywhere.

Does the hotel have a shuttle to the DIsney parks?

hi yes it has a shuttle bus to the disney parks and to the b.v.outlets. i booked it on the wdw uk site cos it got good reviews and it is a one bed suite rather than just one room.i paid for it in full so dont think i can change it now.maybe we will have to get a car then after all.

thanks for your quick and helpful replies

Please mbpool do reconsider getting a car. We stay every year in Lake Buena Vista and really love the area but you do need a car. It will make the difference between a good holiday and a great one.

Look at usrentacar. Best service and prices we have found.

I would get the car, and in that case the hotel will be fine.

You are near a Publix and a Walmart for food/snacks and with the car you can easily get to the shopping centers, malls, nearby restaurants, DTD and Universal. If you want to save on parking and have a break you can take the shuttles to Disney. And if you want to get out in the evening without driving, there are other nearby hotels with restaurants (incl the Marriott where I spent my honeymoon lol) and a taxi to DTD won%26#39;t be too riduculously expensive as a one off.

Look at the cost difference between hire car with insurance and using shuttle to parks (free) and taxi for nights out to restaurants or shopping.

You may find that it%26#39;s cheaper and more relaxing not to hire a car.

Check out some previous posts on this forum ref LBV without a car, there are some very good tips. Also some goods tips on the hotel review.

thanks for the help have to see what we are going to do,i did not think it was that far away from everything. we have hired a car before just did not want to this time that may have to change lol

Going to Key West without a reservation!

I am a representative of a major hotel chain here in Key West.

I would like to know why so many people wait til they get here to try and get a reservation at a hotel or guest house. Is it because of economic challenges that people wait to last minute to decide to come? Is it people think they can get a better deal last minute? Is it people are(probably floridians) are waiting to see weather predictions?

This weekend was valentine%26#39;s day, president%26#39;s day, winter break for some children, and also a beautiful weekend weatherwise. At my hotel we sold out at least a week ago and i seriously turned away 50 walk-ins yesterday and another 20-30 over the phone. I tried to help accomadate people but every hotel and guesthouse i called was completely booked.

There were hundreds on the island without rooms. Where do they go? The beach, miami, or sleep in their cars?

Any thoughts about this would be sincerely appreciated.

Going to Key West without a reservation!

Most of the regular posters here recommend - no strongly suggest - that ravelers enter the keys with reservations.

There have been several posts this last month saying that they think that if they wait until they get down that they can negotiate a better rate.

I figure Good luck to you. if you%26#39;ve got the stones to do it, I hope it works for you.

Its good to know that the rooms are full - especially during the high season. It%26#39;d be a different story if it was September.

Going to Key West without a reservation!

    Hi Simon-S-Keywest,

I%26#39;d be happy to give you some valuable info and feedback, but if I recall correctly the TA Rules state that you have to provide 100% disclosure... so which hotel chain exactly do you represent?

    Cheers!

    Wine-4-2

The disclosure rule if for when He or she starts PROMOTING their establishment.

No promotion is happening. He /she does not have to disclose anything.

The OP was only looking for some insight on why people wait until the last minute to book, especially on a busy holiday weekend.

I%26#39;m sorry i didn%26#39;t disclose that, I wasn%26#39;t sure if that would be looked upon as advertising. The chain that I am a part of is Marriott. I don%26#39;t want to push people one way or the other about my chain as I hope to use this forum to gain information and opinions of the city i live in. If anyone has a negative or positive experience with marriott%26#39;s i will not comment. I appreciate the reply%26#39;s.

    Hi Simon-S-Keywest,

Thank you for being open with us. In turn I will return the favour.

We came down at Christmastime with NO Reservation... although I did inquire about my chances here on the Forum before I left see a topic entitled ';Winging It Over the Christmas Holidays'; - tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g34345-i53-k239827鈥?/a>

Several of the DEs suggested that doing so was probably a mistake, and someone else said that I could take my chances, but it might entail some leg-work (literally) on my part to find a place.

As luck would have it we got a room at the Southernmost Resort immediately upon our arrival... just walked up and asked. They gave us a decent rate... maybe a tad less than the posted rate on the Internet that I checked before we left.

So why did we opt to do a walk-in?

Somewhat because ';winging it'; is part of our travelling style when we tour North America... and partly because we were driving down from Canada. Most places want a long term commitment and payment up front. We had no real idea when we%26#39;d arrive as our departure from home was going to be based on watching the weather fronts.

We were prepared for the worst... which could have meant driving back up the Keys to another location, or back to the mainland entirely.

We did meet another couple, who said on their first visit down one year (although I think they said it was March Break) they ended up sleeping in their car because they couldn%26#39;t find a hotel room.

Hope this is helpful for your research,

    Cheers!

    Wine-4-2

Thank you. That is very interesting and something I didn%26#39;t and should have thought about. It does make sense that many travelers are hitting many destinations and don%26#39;t have exact dates for each location.

I%26#39;m just glad you guys were filled along with so many other properties. (A huge thank you to all our visitors... You are truly valued.)

A question back to one in the industry....

Every other venue in Key West... Attractions, bars, restaraunts, tours etc, rely on the cost of lodgings in order to survive. It%26#39;s the B%26amp;B or hotel cost that will either make or break a vacation... People will either come to Key West or they won%26#39;t. (High prices and minimum stays seem to be big deciding factors on whether people will vacation) My question is %26#39;How much local control does a property that flies a major flag like Marriot, Best Western, Crowne Plaza etc have over room pricing?

    Hi Simon

I shall be in Florida for a few days in December and I was intending to head down to the Keys and if I liked it stay for a couple of days. As its my first trip to Florida I didnt really want to hard wire my travel plans, but I take on board what you%26#39;re saying and will probably rethink my %26#39;just turn up%26#39; strategy.

Just letting you know that not everyone turns up on the off chance of getting a lower rate :-)

    Suzie

I%26#39;ve never quite understood this practice myself... This isn%26#39;t bashing any of the above folks who chose to do it. But I guess we might be different as we know that we are going to the Keys and planning on being there for the week or what not. Seems like some of the above wanted to feel it out first.

I know some people on here seemed to think if they showed up the moment they wanted to check in that they could get a reduced rate. Of course others have told stories that walk ins got quoted significantly more for a room.

I%26#39;ve always been of the mindset that I don%26#39;t want to have hassle first thing on my vacation. Want to walk in, throw m bags down and head out to the action=)

Over here in Marathon we also had a lot wandering around trying to find a last minute room on Friday. Like already stated - it was a holiday weekend with incredible weather. There were some upset last min folk.

I too like winging it when I go on certain vacations, but I also do my best to watch the holidays and events in the area, it surprises me how many people don%26#39;t do that here.

  • We need suggestions on the east coast.

We%26#39;re a couple in our early 60%26#39;s from upstate NY looking for a relaxing Florida getaway somewhere on the eastern coast of Florida. We like being near the water and having things to do. What city would your recommend for a week? What city/citys should we avoid? After we pick a city we%26#39;re going to the look for a condo or hotel with kitchen.

We%26#39;ve been to Miami and Daytona and would rather not go back. We%26#39;ve also been to Sanabel Island, Sarasota, and St. Petersburg on the west coast and have enjoyed those places.

We need suggestions on the east coast.

Melbourne Beach / Indialantic area is small town but still has things to do. Is also only 1 hours drive to Orlando or 20 minutes to Cape Canaveral. Visit Old Downtown Melbourne with shops, restaurants, bars and some entertainment. They have a large art show at the end of April. The King Center has lots of shows to choose from. Vero Beach is another nice small town, not as much to do as Melbourne but still a nice area. If you want something a little more historical try St. Augustine. You can stay beachside %26amp; drive over to the city to explore rather than stay in the tourist area.

We need suggestions on the east coast.

Vero Beach%26#39;s recently rebuilt Riverside Theatre and the Art Museum across the street are quite busy until the end of April, when the snowbirds migrate. The overall tone is affluent, Northeastern, retired. Lilly Pulitzer, not biker bar.

Have you thought about Cocoa Beach. Great beach, relax on the pier, or visit the Kennedy Space Center.

i think of the east coast towns i have visited ft lauderdale would be my first choice

however , above that i would personally choose naples on the west coast , great beaches , plenty of fishing off the pier , lovely places to stay %26amp; eat %26amp; in general a great relaxed atmosphere %26amp; a nice place for strolling %26amp; shopping - also not too much of a drive from the everglades which offers plenty more options for things to do

    Cocoa Beach or St Augustine?

I have a business trip in Orlando this spring, I%26#39;m wondering which is better for a long weekend - St Augustine or Cocoa Beach?

It will be me and my husband hopign to enjoy some beautiful scenery, warm weather (we%26#39;re from MN), and pool time, hopefully with a few good attractions to see.

    Any advice?

    Thanks,

    Bree

    Cocoa Beach or St Augustine?

Cocoa Beach and St. Augustine are very different from each other. Orlando is only 1 hours drive. St. Augustine about 2.5. St. Augustine is more romantic, has a main street with lots of shops, retaurants, bars, etc you can walk to. Horse drawn carriage rides and lots of B%26amp;B%26#39;s. Cocoa Beach has imho better beaches compared to St. Augustines beaches and they are, not as tourist oriented except for Ron Jons and some t-shirt shops. The space center is 5 miles north, visit Cocoa Village shops across the causeway with small shops, good restaurants, etc. Both areas are nice.

    Cocoa Beach or St Augustine?

It looks like the weekend we would be there is the weekend of the Ron Jon Surfing Festival in Cocoa Beach - do you think this will be the type of event that takes over the town?

Here is a link with video of the surf fest

    http://www.eastersurffest.com/

Being Easter weekend it will be fun but crowded. Not sure about taking over the town, however it%26#39;s a lot of young kids and college kids. If you stay in a hotel away from the pier it will be quieter. You could stay in Cape Canaveral or down here in Melbourne / Indialantic. There are a few hotels on the beach and you are about 20 minutes from Cocoa Beach. Easter week is spring break time for a lot of Florida schools.

personally i would choose st aug , reason being i like a bit of sight seeing %26amp; life , whem i visited cocoa beach it was very quiet , restaurants were pretty empty %26amp; in general i found the place more run down than st augustine

if you just want to bum around you may prefer cocoa beach

Been to both and have to say St Augusine(in my opinion) is much nicer. However as previous poster stated it is over 2 and half hours away from Orlando-but worth the trip.

There is a pepboys close to the florida mall.

From I-drive take Sand Lake Rd. Turn Left onto Orange Blossom Trail, then left into Pep Boys...

it may actually be a lot easier to pass pep boys then make a U-turn at a light and come back down Orange Blossom so you%26#39;re making a right into Pep boys. It can be difficult to cross in that area.

Both Autozone and discount auto parts can be found on the corner of Central Florida Parkway and Orange Blossom Trail.

From I-drive take Central Florida Parkway (away from SeaWorld), just before you hit Orange Blossom Trail one of them is on your right, just next to the 7-11 gas station on the corner. The other is on the left.

hi i have already posted about buena vista suites and got really great help can anyone advise about the embassy suites in b.v.are these more central and on a bus route again thanks in advance your advice is very helpful

    embassy suites lake buena vista

The Embassy Suites LBV has free shuttle to the Disney theme parks. They are not within walking distance of a public bus stop. Unless you rent a car, the only way to get around to restaurants and non-disney theme parks would be by taxi. Typically the more economical way to get around this area would be by renting a car.

    embassy suites lake buena vista

The Embassy Suites LBV is pretty inconvenient if you have no car as they are all the way at the Lake Avenue end of Palm Parkway-not on any bus route. And they are sort of worn-but IMHO,preferable to the Buena Vista Suites, much better breakfast and suites

    PCB in April

Hey everyone. I%26#39;m from Britain and travelling around USA for 3 months with 3 other friends. We are all 23 and have a vehicle. PCB looks really nice place and was wondering what it would be like around 20/21/22 April. I understand this is after spring break so would it be very quiet? We would be looking to have a good time and party in a place like this as won%26#39;t be doing a huge amount of this on our trip. But if there will be no other young people there then we probably will not bother visiting.

Would be great to know what people think

    Cheers

    PCB in April

I think you%26#39;ll find it is very quiet that week. Easter week is the last busy week until Memorial day and Easter week ends 4/18. You%26#39;ll be there after all the craziness has ended. I think no matter where you go in the states, the end of April will be slow. Still, the beaches are beautiful and the weather should be very nice that week. In addition, there are plenty of beach restaurants and nightclubs to hang out in so it won%26#39;t be like there%26#39;s nothing to do.

    Our agenda

64 long days to go, but here%26#39;s what we%26#39;re planning on. Any comments are appreciated!

5/14 - arrive, relax, dinner @ Texas deBrazil

    5/15 - Universal

5/16 - resort day (Marriott Grande Vista) and Downtown Disney, dinner @ Ragland Road

    5/17 - Disney Studios - dinner @ Brown Derby

    5/18 - Magic Kingdom - dinner @ CA Grill

    5/19 - Animal Kingdom - dinner @ Boma

    5/20 - Epcot - ';lupper'; @ LeCelliar

    5/21 - Universal

5/22 - Sea World (possibly, as we want to ride Manta on opening day!!!) if not, maybe back to Epcot.

    5/23 - resort, fly home

I got so excited even typing that!! I can%26#39;t wait!!!

    Our agenda

you might want to move your resort day as 6 park days in a row is a lot, however if you have dinner reservations it may not be possible.

Yeah six theme parks in six days is alot. you may want to put a day maybe doing something else like a trip to something like gatorland or just do something like a bit of shopping

    Mexican Restaurants

Does anyone have any current recommendations for Mexican restaurants in the Marco Island/Naples area, I%26#39;m reading a lot of mixed reviews and it%26#39;s for my son%26#39;s birthday dinner and I really don%26#39;t want to disappoint him.

    Mexican Restaurants

On Marco, we enjoy La Casita, didn%26#39;t have a good experience at Margarita%26#39;s, like Amigos but there%26#39;s not much atmosphere. And we still like Nacho Mama%26#39;s.

    Mexican Restaurants

Have always liked Nacho Mamas. It%26#39;s gone a little more upscale. We loved it when it was plastic tables and chairs. The food is still the same, the atmosphere is just a little more upscale. Where are you staying on the island? Nacho Mamas is in Marco Walk with walking distance of any of the resorts or condos on the gulf front. From inland rentals, it%26#39;s on South Collier directly across from the Hilton. When are you going? During traditional Spring Break (around Easter) the lines are obnoxious. When are you going and where are you staying would help to give more info. What a great place for a birthday!

Nacho Mama%26#39;s is good...but we like Amigos. More authentic...but cheezy decor. Service was excellent as was the food.

Have a great time! We%26#39;ll be visiting again in August. Can%26#39;t wait!

Sundowners is also on the bay and a pleasant setting at MM104. The food is good as is service. They keep increasing their prices and the last time my boyfriend and I went there by boat for burgers for lunch (1 beer, 1 ice tea), the bill was $35. We think they are overpriced.

Fish House%26#39;s Encore restaurant is absolutely my favorite. The have a garden patio (no water view) and absolutely superb food %26amp; service. Dinner for 2 (1 wine, 1 ice tea) runs $60+.

Mandalay restaurant has reopened about a week ago as they were part of Cay Clubs bankruptcy process. Chef Lupe from Lazy Days is now there. Should make a difference in their food, though I have not had a chance to go.

Buzzard%26#39;s Roost at MM106 has a view of the ocean and is on a canal. You can sit inside or outside. The service is excellent and the food can vary depending on the day. I have had superb food and average food. They only serve beer %26amp; wine (and non alcoholic drinks). They are probably considered one of several %26#39;best kept secrets%26#39; locals restaurants.

Our newest place in Key Largo, just open 2 weeks, is the Big Chill at MM104. They have a beautiful big tiki bar on the water with happy hour $1 beer from 4-6. It%26#39;s a good place to hang out and enjoy being in Key Largo. I have eaten here twice and found the food average and very overpriced (6 oysters, small salad %26amp; ice tea $18). Good place for drinks only and their live music each day.

    Hope this helps.

How was your trip? I%26#39;m going soon and wondering if you had any advice.

    Renting a Boat

    Staying at Sunset Beach.

Where is the best place to rent a small boat for a few hours?

    Renting a Boat

Here is a link from a previous discussion in the last couple week. It depends on what you want to do while boating where to rent.

Driving by car to Captiva and going out of Jensens saves a lot of time by boat if your wanting to visit the outer islands.

After reading if you have any additional questions ...just ask!

    Italian Restaurants in Coral Springs or ';Crespin';

Does anybody know of any really good Italian restaurants in Crespin? My fiance and I have been looking all over the place, and have yet to find one that is truly authentic. Any suggestions of ';New York Style'; restaurants in Crespin would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Italian Restaurants in Coral Springs or ';Crespin';

Wow! It%26#39;s great to see a resurgence of ';Crespin'; I haven%26#39;t heard that in quite some time. Coral Springs, ';Crespin';, has such a large array of quaint and delicious Italian eateries; however call me crazy I still stand behind the taste and most important the value of the Olive Garden. It%26#39;s located on University Dr about one mile south of the Sample Rd. The service is divine and Michael the General Manager is quite a hoot, a truly wonderful atmosphere and a great place to meet fellow Crespins. Happy Dining!!

    Italian Restaurants in Coral Springs or ';Crespin';

Thank you so much for the great advice. We went to the Olive Garden pursuant to your suggestion, and it was absolutely delightful...They REALLY stand behind the ';unlimited salad and breadsticks!!!'; We probably ate them right out of business with that offer! Thanks again!

Pizza Time on the south side of Sample Road, 1 block east of Coral Ridge drive is a must. When you walk in, there are pizzas behind the glass display, you can order by the slice. They have specialty pizzas that are different from what you find in most places.

    Hi everyone,

My husband %26amp; I are planning a vacation in Florida in April. Our flight is to Forth Lauderdale, but don%26#39;t think that would be our ideal place for a romantic vacation.

So appreicate your suggestions for somewhere fun %26amp; romantic not too far from Forth Lauderdale, with affordable nice resort, a good beach is important for sure:).

    Thanks a lot,

  • client time
  • Need place for wide range of interests??

We will be traveling to Panhandle area in mid-April and I%26#39;m trying to find a place that will satisfy ';kids'; from 11 to 25 (all boys, so shopping isn%26#39;t a biggy). Of course the younger will not be looking for nightlife (or the same kind of ';scene'; as the older crew), but I am trying to figure out where is the best place to stay. I was drawn to the South Walton beaches, from Dune Allen to Seacrest, but not sure it gives the 4 ';kids'; over 21 enough music, bars, etc? Wondering if staying in Ft Walton area is a better idea than South Ft Walton? 3 of us are flying in/out of Ft Walton... the others are driving from New Orleans, so we have some flexibility on where but don%26#39;t want to drive more than 1/2 hr to 45min to rental. I%26#39;ve been searching and know we definitely want to be gulf side, if not gulf front. Any suggestions on a diverse beach for all?

    Thanks!

  • Sacrifices for Orlando

After being a smoker for 25 years I decided to stop so I could fund my holiday to Orlando. I have saved just over 拢2000 for my spending money and today is exactly a year since I stopped smoking. I was just wondering what other sacrificies people have made all for 2 weeks of fun and sunshine?

    Sacrifices for Orlando

Hi we havent made to many sacrafices but well done you on giving up the cigaretes...hope you have a Fab time..

    Sacrifices for Orlando

We haven%26#39;t sacrificed too much for this holiday, but we may certainly have to for future ones! We normally go away three times a year - one %26#39;big%26#39; holiday and two one week R %26amp; R type holidays. I guess it will be one or both of the other holidays that will go!

I have to congratulate you on giving up smoking. What a wonderfull achievement! I have never smoked but have asthma and bronchiestasis. Unfortunately my father smoked about 60 a day and as I was a daddy%26#39;s girl I was obviously %26#39;passive smoking%26#39;. The dangers weren%26#39;t known then so I can%26#39;t blame my Dad. It%26#39;s just bad luck.

It%26#39;s so great that you have been prepared to make such an effort for your family. Your general health and wealth will improve all round. Well done!

    Regards,

    Deaconblue

    Thanks for your message Deaconblue.

Health benefits already kicking in. I am riding London - Brighton bike ride this year for charity and also London - Southend 4 weeks later 60 miles each time.

    Here%26#39;s to many more holidays

Hi Dagenham, well done. I have never smoked but having lost both my parents at a very young age due to smoking, I know how hard that must of been.

I sacrifice loads for a holiday. I dont drink, dont smoke, I dont go out with friends ever. As all I keep thinking is 拢20 for a night out or 拢20 to buy ice-creams in Magic Kingom. UMM not much of a choice in my eyes.

I save all my change in my purse, and If I get gift tokens as presents, I will always purchase something for the trip.

One thing I can not sacrifice, and that is chocolate. But I think I may try that as I reacon I must spend at least 拢5 pw on chocolate, so that would make 拢260 per year at least wow, ummm I may have to think about that one, could it be a sacrifice too far.!!

    Caz

Gotta keep chocolate as a pleasure!!!!. Dont give it all up hun. Unless of course you start to think that a double seat needs to be booked, but lookking at your pics that wont be an issue. x

    Well Done Dagenham!!!!!

I don%26#39;t have to sacrifice much now, but when the kids were small I sacrificed lots: New Shoes (for me not them lol) eating out, takeaways, going out for a drink, I even did some market research as with 3 under 5 I couldn%26#39;t work as the childcare would have been more than I made. I also bought all my meat etc in the reduced isle where it has that day%26#39;s date on it and sells for half price.

But it was worth it. And in your case you will be saving 2200 quid a year, every year and you will have lots more of these years due to your new healthier lifestyle. So enjoy your holiday as you have truly earned it!

Dagenham- So happy for you! You must feel so healthy! As a Dental Hygienist, I will tell you that I%26#39;m proud of you, cigarette smoke affects more than just your lungs!

Well we normally just cut back on eating out and frivilous spending before we go on vacation! Our upcoming trip to Disney was almost cancelled because of our pup needing a $2300 surgery! But we are still going, just not planning on buying to much while we are down there! And I%26#39;m working hard at keeping the grocery bill down.

Once again, Congrats on quitting smoking!

    Tam:)

    chelly

Thanks for the shopping tips. Thank heavens for sell by dates.

If I gave up smoking you have to believe me when I say anyone can. I tried 5 times and then discovered a pill called Zyban from the doctor.

I have finally discovered how food tastes and smells so can%26#39;t wait to get to Logans Roadhouse for a steak lol

With your new tastebuds you are going to have to watch piling on the pounds when you are there lol! Have fun.

    Hotel Question

    Hi:

My wife is forcing me to accompany her to Florida in December to see her mother. Her mom lives in Boca and we have two kids, 4 and 6. We presently have reservations at both the Spring Hill Suites and the Renaissance.

I read the reviews here - the Spring Hill Suites may be a bit larger, with the option of the two double beds and the pull out couch, for about 30 more per night. I am particularly looking for comparisons or thoughts as to:

    - the pools

    - the exercise rooms

    - the breakfast

    - kid friendlyness (now a word)

    thanks,

    Cladesi Island Park

We are a party of eight and want to get to Caladesi Island for the day, it seems expensive to enter Honeymoon park and ferry it over, Would it be better to rent a boat, or are there any water taxi%26#39;s about?

    Cladesi Island Park

There are no water taxis there. Your best bet is to take the ferry. I think it%26#39;s $9-10 per person. You could not rent a boat for less than that I don%26#39;t think.

Just to be sure you are aware of the 4 hour time limit on the island when using the ferry. This is so everyone will not wait til the last ferry of the day, and there would not be enough room for everyone.

Technically you can walk from Clearwater Beach, but it is not practical. Just get on the beach and head North. But, you would have to find a place to park on the beach, and the walk would take a few hours I would guess. Not an easy walk either. You would need to carry all your supplies, water, food, etc.

The ferry will be the easiest and most enjoyable way to go.

Offset the cost by everyone splitting a loaf of bread and a package of ham for lunch one day instead of a restaurant... just an idea.

    Cladesi Island Park

Thank you, we will absolutely take the ferry.

Restaurants walking distance Fairfield Inn LBV

Hi there, I know about Golden Corral and Bahama Breeze, can anyone suggest any other restaurants we can walk to when we stay at Fairfield Inn LBV? My husband likes to have a drink in the evenings so would rather not drive if poss.

Restaurants walking distance Fairfield Inn LBV

There is also a Landry%26#39;s Seafood restaurant that has a nice bar. You can either just have a drink or dinner also. Landry%26#39;s is walking distance to the Fairfield LBV.

Restaurants walking distance Fairfield Inn LBV

There is also a new Carrabas in this area that just recently opened. They also have a bar as well as a restaurant.

If you walk to the crossroads shopping area then there are a few over there as well it will probably take around 10 -15 mins to walk.

    Chris

Thanks guys, will probably try Carrabbas as I%26#39;ve seen in other locations getting good reviews. Landrys seems to have quite mixed reviews, would you recommend?

  • Horseshoe Crab Info

For those of you that may be around during the full moon and want to help out.

Biologists seek public¹s help for horseshoe crab research

Biologists at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission%26#39;s

(FWC) Fish and Wildlife Research Institute need help from the public in identifying horseshoe crabs spawning on beaches throughout the state.

The best time to find horseshoe crabs spawning is around high tide, right before or just after a full or new moon. The full moon on March 12 and similar conditions on March 13 will create good conditions for viewing the crabs. The next full moon will occur on April 10.

Observant beachgoers can report the time, date and location of horseshoe-crab sightings through one of several convenient options. Go to http://research.MyFWC.com/horseshoe_crab and fill out an online survey; e-mail findings to horseshoe@MyFWC.com; or call the FWC at 866-252-9326.

Biologists also want to know the number of horseshoe crabs seen by observers and whether the horseshoe crabs are mating. They also want to know the date, time, location and habitat conditions. If possible, specify roughly how many are coupled and how many are juveniles (4 inches wide or smaller).

Horseshoe crabs benefit humans in several ways. For instance, research on the compound eyes of horseshoe crabs led to better understanding of the human vision system, and horseshoe crab blood is useful in the biomedical industry. In addition, manufacturers use the material of a horseshoe crab¹s shell (chitin) to make contact lenses, skin creams and hair sprays.

I%26#39;ve never seen one in Destin, at least on the Gulf beaches or in the Pass while snorkeling. I haven%26#39;t really poked around much in the bay; are they common there?

I%26#39;ve seen a few dead ones along the pass on the west side.

They are very prevalent in S. Fl on the east coast.

Miami 9 day trip, low-med budget 3 females, MUST DOs?

29th March-7th April this year. Flying into Miami from the UK. Lowish budget holiday. 3 adult females 29-39.

    Enjoy outdoors stuff, adventures etc.

Happy to travel around and stay in different accomodation. Do not want an all inclusive.

I hear florida Keyes, the everglades are worth visting, as well as miami beach.....What else are the must dos??

We also hope to pop to The Bahamas for a day or two. How long does it take on e.g. a boat?

    Thank you

Miami 9 day trip, low-med budget 3 females, MUST DOs?

Sounds as if you dont mind traveling a bit. The Keys from Miami (depending on how far down you go) can run from a couple hour trip to several (depending on traffic of course). The Everglades, for an airboat ride or other tour, is about a 30-45 minute ride from Miami.

Some other ';low'; budget ideas might be, of course, hanging on South Beach. There are several musuems, zoos (Miami Metrozoo) and attractions down there too which are reasonable (Jungle Island, Miami Seaquarium, Vizcaya).

Depending on when your flight is, and if you can find one, you might want to look into a three-day cruise to the Bahamas. Not sure of the price, but since you asked.

  • travel to key west from miami

other than renting a car and driving to key west, what are other options?

travel to key west from miami

Greyhound: 2 buses a day. est 5 hrs. Go to Greyhound.com.

    Various air lines.

travel to key west from miami

You could fly there. But that trip Miami to Key West is probably one of the nicest in the country. Its not the Hana Highway in Hawaii or the Pacific Coast Highway in Cal, but still pretty cool. Its about 4 hours if you didn%26#39;t stop or no accidents. You really should stop at places along the way though. I would recommend staying 3 nights in Key West, this way you have two full days to do things. One day could be spent doing all the touristy things around Duval street. The other day could be spent diving/snorkeling or even a day trip out to the fort.

    Need advice on Universal

First time back at Universal in 10 years. Now my son is old enough (15) to go on all of the rides. How much time should we allot for both parks? Factors: we don%26#39;t do much browsing so our shopping time is minimal. Obviously, no kiddie rides. That being said, do they still have the restaurant where the Seuss characters come around? We%26#39;ve been to Universal in SoCal and can skip duplicate rides. We also don%26#39;t like to wait in lines so any type of Front of the Line pass is preferable. Have not decided on accommodations so we could opt for Universal hotel. Finally, this trip will occur in summer because we have to work around school sched. Remainder of the trip will be at Disney but we%26#39;ll save that for another post!

    Need advice on Universal

    When is Summer to you?

If June go then and go early. Early July- mid August is very crowded as you have the Europeans as well as US visitors. Very late August/early September is slightly better, but more chance of bad weather.

Got to your Park early, and ride most pop things first. Unless you are staying in a Universal resort with an ulitimate fastpass. Having said that, it will be hot when you go whatever, so I%26#39;d stick with the get there early, leave early and swim in your hotel pool option.

    Need advice on Universal

    Hi fredorules

If you dont like queuing you will have to buy the express pass for universal, last year the characters were at certain points at certain times. I did not see any of the characters in any of the resturants. As for how long for each park depends on what time you are getting there and how busy the express lines are.

we went late june early july one year and it was v busy. The express pass (which you pay for) is one option to allow you to skip the queues. But as said previously July/August you will get alot of visitors from UK and Europe...if you do not wish to buy express pass then go really early and get to the popular rides first...

There is a character meal in IOA, the one we went to has Spider man and thing 1 and 2 etc...

As for lines, I do not like waiting either but am happy to and expect to wait up to 20 mins or so...if I really wanted to avoid crowds then I would and do try to go at the appropriate times..ie; Sept/Oct/May

Have a great time abywhooo ;0)

If it%26#39;s in your budget I%26#39;d highly recommend staying at one of the on-site Universal resorts. You%26#39;ll have front of the line for your entire stay. A one night%26#39;s stay will give you FOL access from the time you check in (We did this at 7:30 AM) until park closing of the day you check out. I took my two during the summer when they were around the age of your son and we were able to enjoy everything in two days. They really LOVED the Hard Rock!

    Jennifer

Jennifer, how do you get the FOL for 7:30 if that%26#39;s the day you check in? Do they allow you to check in early?

All: thanks for your suggestions. We last went in 1999 and my son had not started school so we could go in May to avoid the crowds. We%26#39;d like to try to avoid the lines - we did the FOL at Universal in SoCal and saw everything we wanted to see in one day - some of those lines looked horrendous. It sounds like it%26#39;s doable in two days with the FOL. And yes, I believe the restaurant with the characters was in IOA - I just wanted to take pictures of him 10 years later to compare with the same ones I took in 99.

You can check in very early, before the parks even open. Your room probably won%26#39;t be ready but you%26#39;ll get your hotel IDs which will give you FOL at both parks. We checked in, got our keys and hit Islands of Adventure when it opened. The next day we checked out early but were still able to use our keys for FOL at Universal Studios. It was the busy summertime season so this was GREAT!

My kids loved the Hard Rock especially the pool. It%26#39;s really neat because there are underwater speakers so you can rock out while you swim.

    Jennifer

Been researching a trip to Universal for next week. The restaurant with the character breakfast is Confisco Grill. It normally includes Cat in the Hat, Thing 1%26amp;2, and Spiderman. You might check on the Universal forum at Disboards or IOACentral, but I believe this meal is offered only during ';peak'; periods. Someone on those sites may be able to tell you whether it will be available during your stay.

One other tip. There is a difference between the Express Pass you can purchase and staying at an on-site resort. The purchased pass is only good for one visit to each major attraction. Guests of on-site resorts receive unlimited use of the Express pass line at the attractions. So, if your son loves Hulk, he could ride it over and over again...

I will be able to give you a little more information on peak crowds and lines after Christmas (our trip is Dec. 19-27), but from what I%26#39;ve found on-line, I would guess 2 days would be sufficient with Express passes.

Thanks all - some really helpful info here.

One question about the use of Universal hotel room keys as FOTL passes. Do you show the room key at the FOTL or do they scan it? We will be staying at Disney for the remainder of the trip, but could we return to Universal with the original room keys for FOTL use if we decide to do one more day there a week later?

    Hi Fredorules

I would suggest probabley a day for both parks if there is quit a lot you want to do the worst thing is rushing around the park.Im not too sure about the resturants where doctor seuss still comes around but i imagine that he still is doing that at the green eggs and ham resturant as this resturant is themed on cat in the hat.As you do not like to wait in lines, if you do end up staying in a universal hotel then you can use your room card as a line pass so you can get to the front of the lines. As i have done this when i stayed at the portafino bay hotel.

    printing boarding passes

We are going in Feb to Marco. Does anyone know of a place we can go and print our boarding passes? thanks

    printing boarding passes

Where are you staying? If it%26#39;s a rental property, if you have a laptop, Star Bucks has free WI-FI. If you%26#39;re staying at a resort, the consierge will print it for you. You can go to the Marriott on South Collier, tell them you need your boarding passes and they will print them for you or let you use their Business Center to print them. I%26#39;ve seen them do this for people when it was incredibly crowded so I think you should be O.K. If you could give me more info, I might be more help. Good Luck!

    printing boarding passes

We are staying at a condo.....Seaview 921 South Collier Blvd. across from south access. This condo does not have internet access but I really need a place I can print them. What would you recommend? thanks

What about at the library on Marco? Or at the Chamber of Commerce?

Cybercafe and More is on Royal Palm at the north end of the island. That%26#39;s a 10 minute drive in traffic. I%26#39;d still try the Marriott. It%26#39;s at 400 South Collier. You%26#39;ll pass it on your way in. I%26#39;ve seen them do it for people at the front desk. Since the airlines have started this insane trend, like we don%26#39;t pay enough to get a lousy boarding pass! We%26#39;re not there until March, or I%26#39;d do it for you. BTW, you%26#39;re staying out on the point! What a great place! Have you stayed there before or is this the first time?

what do you mean the point? It is across the street from the south beach access. Maybe I put the address in wrong. LOL. We stayed a few blocks from the entrance last year. Short walk to the beach.

BTW tunnerbudd you are right the area is great!

The southern most tip of the island. We hike down there on the beach just to sit! Gorgeous!

    Shhhh..........don%26#39;t tell anyone! It%26#39;s wonderful.

I certainly would not worry about spending a lot of time looking for a place to print your boarding passes. If you don%26#39;t accomplish this just go to the automated stand in the airport and print them up...easy to do and as you will have to be at the airport early should not be a problem. If you are flying SW though you will want to try to do it in advance. Not certain if libraries have the facilities to print but most hotels do. Just walk in and look in their lobby as I know Hampton Inns have a computer and printer available.

In our trips to Florida, we%26#39;ve found that local libraries usually allow non-residents to use a library pc connected to the Internet and a printer for 15 minutes for a nomimal fee. You%26#39;ll be about 2 miles from the local public library. I could not tell from their web site if they extend this courtesy to non-residents. Libraries are also a convenient place to donate any books you do not want to lug back home.

The dog was taking me for a walk the other morning and pulled me past a place called ';White Street Bistro'; (about 1000 block of White) - and the menu looked limited, but reasonably priced. Anyone been there or heard a POV?

I use to order delivery from the Deli all the time. I loved the sandwiches! She had a roast beef with blue cheese and carmalized onions that I still crave. She is a very talented and respected Chef.

Although, this reply is past the date your guests would be in town, I was in KW for my wedding. Although I did not eat off the bistro%26#39;s menu, we did have our wedding reception in the garden. The food was excellent as was the service. The garden was a beautiful location for our reception and Jennifer and her staff decorated it tastefully. Her prices for a wedding reception with bar service were much lower than others on KW. We loved our wedding experience in KW and would recommend Jennifer%26#39;s services for any dining experience.

I started the first post that has a link above and have continued to go there several times. It has always been very good and with most options still under $10, it is a great value. The wine list as also one of the most affordable in Key West with good choices in the $20 a bottle range.

Thanks for the positive feedback - and we did finally make it there last week - and it was great. The service was very attentive and professional (thanks Patrick!), and the food very good. It seems as though the prices went up about $1-$2 since I first walked by, but still an outstanding value (most things about $10). This is one of KW%26#39;s hidden treasures. Worth the trip - and repeat visits.
